Letter from the Director

Dear Residents,

I would like to thank the Board of Trustees, the Friends Foundation, and everyone in the community who helped support the building of our new Teen/Media Center. Everyone at the Library is very excited about this great addition to our facility!

The Library is proud to be working with local resident and former Trustee Richard Schuster to display historical “dioramas” in the Children’s Room. Richard has been collecting and painting historical miniatures for over 60 years. He has one of the largest collections of miniatures (or as some call them, “toy soldiers”) in the nation. With over 30,000 figures and vehicles, Richard has donated and collaborated on historical dioramas for the New-York Historical Society Museum, the Museum of the American Revolution, West Point Military Museum, Nassau County Museum of Art, and, in the near future, Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay.

These dioramas promote the teaching of history and we hope that our young children and students will be inspired to read further about the events depicted in miniature. During the past summer, Richard and his grandson Brooklyn (a West Side School student) put together a fascinating diorama of Ancient Egypt for the Library. Currently, a diorama depicting a Northeast Woodland Indian Village and Lacrosse Game is showing in the Children’s Room. Future dioramas will highlight events from the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Conquest of Mexico, Ancient Rome and Greece, and European history. We hope you will all enjoy these wonderful displays.

I look forward to seeing you at the Library!

Sincerely,

Dr. Roger Podell

Dear Residents,

It’s hard to believe that fall is already here. We had an exciting summer at the Library, including a great turnout for Summerfest and our Summer Reading Club! Our Summer Benefit to support our new Teen/Media Center was also very successful. Plans to construct the Teen/Media Center are continuing, and I believe it will be an exciting addition to the Library that the entire community will be proud of. If you would like to participate, we are accepting donations for personalized Wall Tiles that will be placed inside the new room. Please go to our website at cshlibrary.org, or ask at the Circulation Desk for details.
